Ole Miss freshman football player Corey Adams, 18, was killed in a shooting over the weekend.

The Ole Miss football team confirmed Adams' death in a statement shared on its social media accounts Sunday (July 20).

"We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee," the statement reads. "While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

"Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved."

The shooting took place in Cordova, a community on the outskirts of Memphis, as law enforcement officials found Adams with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at an intersection, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office confirmed Sunday via the Associated Press.

“They provided life-saving measures until Shelby County Fire arrived,” the sheriff’s office said. “Shelby County Fire personnel later pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.”

Four other men reported to have suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds were taken to nearby hospitals in personal vehicles. Suspects have not been publicly named by authorities and a homicide investigation is ongoing.

Adams, who enrolled early at Ole Miss this past winter, rated as a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 74 defensive lineman, No. 25 player from the state of Louisiana and No. 659 overall prospect for the 2025 national recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite.
